School of Psychology and Behavioural Sciences Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and behaviour. Why do some people act against common sense? Can fear lead individuals to act against their own values? Why do repeated fake news stories start to seem more believable? These are some of the questions Psychology seeks to answer.

About the Programme

Ispa’s bachelor’s degree in psychology is the first and oldest Psychology course in Portugal. It offers a broad understanding of the various fields of psychology through a multidisciplinary approach that places a strong emphasis on practical experience, encouraging participation in research projects from the very first year. Structured in line with the most up-to-date curricular guidelines, the bachelor’s in psychology at Ispa is aligned with the qualification standards set by the Portuguese Psychologists’ Association (Ordem dos Psicólogos Portugueses) and the European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations.

In keeping with Ispa’s values, this degree promotes students’ ability to think critically and creatively, approaching human thought, emotion, and behaviour from a broad and integrated perspective. To be an Ispian – to study at Ispa – is also to be part of a network of over 10,000 alumni with diverse professional experiences, a valuable asset that may facilitate future entry into the job market.

Course Duration

The Psychology Bachelor’s degree has a duration of 3 academic years (6 semesters), totalling 180 ECTS credits.

Career Opportunities

A master’s degree is required to obtain the professional title of Psychologist. This bachelor’s degree provides the essential foundation for progressing to the specialised master’s programmes offered at Ispa.

Students who choose to graduate with the bachelor’s degree only will not be qualified to practise as Psychologists, but may work under supervision in contexts such as:

  • Hospitals and healthcare services
  • Human Resources, recruitment and consultancy
  • Local authorities and state services
  • Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs)
  • Private Social Solidarity Institutions (IPSS)
  • Prison and social reintegration services
  • Higher education institutions

Ispa rewards students who demonstrate outstanding academic merit by awarding scholarships, granted based on admission grades or performance within their programme of study.

In addition to recognising merit, Ispa is also committed to promoting fairness and social responsibility. For this reason, students facing economic hardship may apply for a variety of scholarships that serve as a financial and social support.
