Neuropsychology aims to study and understand the relationship between the nervous system and behaviour, providing tools for assessment and techniques for intervention, integrated within a phenomenological framework of Psychology. It is increasingly a key area of intervention across diverse contexts.

About the Programme

Neuropsychology is a field of Psychology that works with inputs from and in interface with multiple disciplines, namely neuroscience, neurology, clinical psychology, and psychiatry. It responds to societal needs across various domains, particularly in supporting individuals with brain dysfunction at any stage of life, and the consequent requirements for assessment and rehabilitation. Combining theoretical training with practice and case studies, the Master’s degree includes a placement in a real-world context and the development of an original research dissertation.

Course Duration

The Study Cycle has a duration of 2 academic years (4 semesters), totalling 120 ECTS credits.

1st Year: completion of course units.

2nd Year: curricular placement and development of an original dissertation.

Programme Objectives

  • To provide an in-depth foundation for the study and understanding of the relationship between brain and behaviour;
  • To promote knowledge of neuropsychological syndromes, neuropsychological theory, neuropsychological tests, neuroanatomy, neurological diseases, and brain injury and deficits;
  • To equip students with knowledge and competences in neuropsychological consultation, assessment, and intervention relevant to clinical practice;
  • To develop the ability to problematise and seek conceptual and methodological solutions for a better understanding of the relationship between brain functioning and cognitive functions;
  • To develop research competences in Neuropsychology.

Admission

Designed specifically for graduates in Psychology, this programme aims to prepare students for independent professional practice as Psychologists.

It offers specialised training that equips students to work in the field of Neuropsychology, in accordance with the legal framework for admission to the Portuguese Psychologists’ Association, established by Law 57/2008 of 4 September, as well as the recommendations of the European Diploma in Psychology / European Framework for Psychologists’ Training.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday – 17:30 to 20:30

Saturday – 09:30 to 12:30

The placement takes place during working hours, in accordance with the schedules of the host institutions.

The application process for the master’s degree in Neuropsychology is managed by the Faculty of Health Sciences and Nursing of Universidade Católica Portuguesa. To apply for this master’s degree, please consult further information here.

This master’s degree Enables

  • Registration as a Junior Psychologist with the Portuguese Psychologists’ Association (OPP), as a step towards obtaining the professional title of Psychologist.
  • The practice of Clinical Psychology in public or private settings after obtaining the professional title of Psychologist, awarded by the OPP.
  • Access to 3rd cycle graduate training (Doctoral Degree / PhD).

Partnership

The Faculty of Health Sciences and Nursing of Universidade Católica Portuguesa and Ispa – Instituto Universitário, two of the institutions with the strongest tradition in Portuguese higher education, have joined as strategic partners to establish a consortium in the field of Neuropsychology and Neuroscience.

This partnership is based on the sharing of synergies, both in terms of human resources (particularly highly qualified lecturers with complementary training) and technical resources (including state-of-the-art laboratories, video monitoring systems, electroencephalography, among others).

The commitment of these two institutions to a project of excellence in teaching, research, and social intervention has resulted in one of the best academic offers in Europe in this field.
