Behavioural Biology

This programme aims to provide advanced training in the theories and methods for studying and analysing the main research areas in Behavioural Biology in which Ispa has recognised expertise and excellence, namely: neuroendocrinology and the ontogenetic development of behaviour; behavioural ecology and conservation; behaviour as a factor in evolution; and animal behaviour and welfare.

About the Programme

This study cycle promotes the development of competences in theoretical advancement and critical analysis, the acquisition of advanced research techniques both in the laboratory and in the field, and the production of original research work to be presented in the form of scientific articles or posters, oral presentations at scientific meetings, or meetings with decision-makers, managers, or science funders. MARE, rated Excellent in the latest evaluation by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), supports this study cycle by integrating its PhD researchers into the course units.

Course Duration

The Doctoral Study Cycle has a duration of 4 academic years (8 semesters), corresponding to a total of 240 ECTS credits.

Programme Objectives

  • To acquire an in-depth understanding and integration of the main theories of modern Biology and to apply professionally and competently the principal methods and techniques, particularly those relating to Behavioural Biology;
  • To master advanced statistical analysis of ecological, evolutionary, behavioural, and genetic data, and the interpretation of results obtained;
  • To design, plan, adapt, and conduct scientific research in Behavioural Biology, respecting the ethical principles underlying the research process and the use of animals in experimentation;
  • To communicate research findings and their theoretical and methodological foundations clearly and professionally to diverse audiences, including scientists, members of the academic community, decision-makers, managers, and the public.

Admission

1 – The following may apply to Ispa’s Doctoral Programmes:

  1. a) holders of a master’s degree or legally equivalent qualification;
  2. b) holders of a bachelor’s degree who possess an especially relevant academic or scientific curriculum recognised by Ispa’s Scientific Council as attesting the ability to successfully complete this study cycle;
  3. c) holders of an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum recognised by Ispa’s Scientific Council as attesting the ability to successfully complete this study cycle.

2 – The recognition referred to in points b) and c) of paragraph 1 grants access only to the study cycle leading to the doctoral degree, and does not confer equivalence to, or recognition of, a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
