Lisbon offers an excellent quality of life, combining a rich cultural heritage, a vibrant international atmosphere and a mild climate throughout the year. Although living costs have increased in recent years, Portugal remains more affordable than many other Western European countries.

Students should expect to budget approximately €900–€1,300 per month, depending on their lifestyle and accommodation choices.

Typical monthly expenses include:

• Food and groceries: €150–€300
• Public transport (student pass): €30–€40

Portugal has an extensive ATM network (Multibanco), available in banks, shopping centres and public spaces.

Students can easily:

• Withdraw cash
• Make payments and transfers
• Purchase transport tickets and other services

International debit and credit cards are widely accepted.

Students staying in Portugal for an extended period may wish to open a Portuguese bank account. This generally requires proof of identity and a Portuguese tax number (NIF).

ISPA provides students with one café/bar and one canteen on campus. Portuguese cuisine is varied and strongly influenced by Mediterranean traditions, offering a wide range of meat, fish, vegetarian and vegan options.

Portugal’s National Health Service (SNS) provides access to healthcare through local health centres and hospitals.

Linha Saúde 24 (SNS 24) is a national public health helpline. It provides 24/7 phone guidance, triage, and support for non-emergency medical situations.

Students are required to hold valid health insurance throughout their mobility period. EU/EEA students should travel with a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Students from non-EU countries are advised to obtain comprehensive private health insurance before arrival.

Pharmacies are widely available and provide out-of-hours emergency services on a rotating basis.

ISPA is committed to providing an inclusive learning environment and complies with Portuguese legislation regarding accessibility and equal opportunities. Students requiring specific support are encouraged to contact the International Office before arrival so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

All incoming students must be covered by:

• The insurance policy provided by their home institution; or
• Private insurance valid in Portugal.

Internship opportunities may be available depending on the academic area and host institution capacity. Applications should normally be submitted by the end of June and are subject to approval by the relevant academic coordinator.

The Students’ Association plays an active role in university life, organising cultural, social and sporting activities throughout the academic year. International students may also participate in the Buddy Programme, designed to support their integration into the ISPA community and life in Lisbon.
