Doctoral Degrees

Integrative Biology and Biomedicine

School of Biosciences

In partnership with Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência and Universidade NOVA de Lisboa

This doctoral programme, resulting from a partnership between Ispa and Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, aims to train a group of PhD graduates in the biological sciences, particularly in fundamental biology, at a high international standard, competitive worldwide, and capable of meeting the country’s future needs in creating critical mass and, consequently, high-quality science.

About the Programme

The programme seeks to expose students from diverse scientific backgrounds (biology, biochemistry, physics, mathematics) to a set of curricular modules that span the breadth of biology, both conceptually and technologically, from the molecular to the population level, and from the millisecond to the geological timescale.

This training is delivered by a group of active researchers across all these areas, based at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) and other partner institutions, as well as invited faculty from research centres around the world.

At the end of this study cycle, students will develop their theses in laboratories at the IGC.

Course Duration

The Doctoral Study Cycle has a duration of 4 academic years (8 semesters), corresponding to a total of 240 ECTS credits.

Objetivos do curso

  • Adquirir vastos conhecimentos sobre biologia como disciplina: da sua história à investigação de ponta em desenvolvimento, hoje, através do globo;
  • Desenvolver uma forte capacidade analítica e crítica bem como uma cultura de rigor e dedicação, para triunfar no mercado de trabalho e, em particular, no meio académico.
