Project's Summary:

Although (a) the Portuguese welfare institute (Instituto da Segurança Social, 2005) acknowledges the need to improve the quality of family child care environments and (b) there is a legal mandate to provide the systematic technical support necessary to the family child care service provision (namely through home visiting support, training sessions and/or workshops and, when needed, provision of indispensable equipment), there are no empirical data available to assist professionals in identifying the most effective and efficient systematic technical support programs. Furthermore, there are no empirical data available to assess the outcomes of the technical support programs currently available to professionals that actually provide technical support to family child care providers. In this study, we aim to study the effectiveness of a consultation model designed to improve the quality of family child care services (Palsha & Wesley, 1998).

Project’s aims:

1. To identify the type of technical support (i.e., type of training and supervision) most likely to positively influence the quality of structure and process dimensions of the family child care environments.

2. To implement a consultation model of quality enhancement designed to promote the quality of family child care services provided to Portuguese children.

3. To investigate the effects of the consultation model of quality enhancement on the family child care environments available to Portuguese children.
