• Newly integrated Project Arenaria, in partnership with the National Natural History Museum And the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) that aims to do the first exhaustive census of Portuguese coastal birds.
• In the latest Research Unit Evaluation (2008), conducted by the portuguese Science and Tecnology Foundation (FCT), the EERU/UIEE was evaluated as EXCELLENT, the highest rank, in the Field of Marine Sciences. This is particularly noteworthy, as it was the only to recieve this rank among the 5 Marine Science research units; is the first Marine Sciece resarch unit, which is not an Associate Lab, to have ever done so; and is one among only three Natural Sciences research units have earned the highest mark.
• Approval of a MARINERA grant «Marine phylogeographic structuring during climate change: the signature of leading and rear edge of range shifting populations». A first meeting of the group project, involving researchers from Portugal (ISPA and CCMAR), Spain (IMEDEA and Univ. Cádiz), Germany (AWI)and Norway (IMR), will be held on Feb. 12-13th of February. • Participatied in the global and national commemorations of Darwin Year (200th anniversary of Charles Robert Darwin's birth, on Feb. 12th; and 150th anniversary of the first publication of «On the Origin of Species», on Nov. 24th). UIEE/ISPA organized:

- a one-day seminar «Frontiers of the Human», with biologists, psychologists, philosophers, and anthopologists; in May.

- a one-day seminar on the «Frontlines of Modern Evolutionary Biology», aimed at evolutionary biologists, with several keynote speakers; in September.

- the 5th Annual Nacional Meeting of Evolutionary Biology; in December. (see video of guest lecturer, Doug Futuyma, and Full Program)
