Curriculum vitae

:: Research interests

My interests are now centered on combining genetic tools with conventional biogeographical approaches to clarify a number of issues. One of them is concerned with the study of the impact of the Pleistocene glaciations in the formation of the present fish fauna of the northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean. The roles of the Mediterranean and the eastern tropical Atlantic as refugia for warm water species and centers of speciation are central to this effort. At the same time, accessing the current impacts of climatic and oceanographical fluctuations on the year to year fluctuations of the composition of the ichthyiofauna, are a complementary research area.

The second center of my current activity, is the will to develop, with all partners that may be willing to cooperate, a program to use the genetic information of the native freshwater fishes to reconstruct the faunal history of the freshwaters of the Iberian peninsula and Portugal in particular. I am aware that this effort will not be the achievement of a single person, not even of a single laboratory. However, as more and more species are studied phylogenetically and phylogeographically, the more firm the data base available for paleogeographical reconstruction will be.

Meanwhile, I will keep my efforts to study behaviour evolution and the patterns of morphological change that took place in the evolution of selected fish groups, trying to integrate behaviour and ecology in a historical context. Blenniids and cyprinids are major model groups in this study.

The third line of activity for the near future will be to complete as much as possible the data base on embryonic and larval development of littoral fishes that our laboratory is pursuing for several years. This work is aimed to be of practical use, helping in larval identification and determination of larval durations. At the same time, it will provide a data base for studying from an evolutionary and biogeographical perspective, the diversity of larval forms and life history strategies that often vary even among closely related species.

We also hope to deepen our understanding of the behaviour of littoral fishes and of the dynamics of the intertidal fish assemblages, by increasing the work of fish observations during high tide. Ironically, although the tide pools are among the marine habitats that are more accessible to human observation, until now, most work has been done during low tide, when these fish are most inactive and restricted to a minute portion of their habitat.

Finally, there is work that is not in itself innovative but should be continued. I am aware that our research unit has one of the longest and more thorough data series on littoral fishes, extending for more than ten years. This medium term time series, than involves breeding seasons, fish numbers, recruitment success etc, may be of great value as a reference frame with which to compare future situations. This data set is the product of the persistent efforts of several colleagues, especially Cláudia Faria for the intertidal and Emanuel Gonçalves and Miguel Henriques for the subtidal. Without public funding, and with a financing scheme based in projects that span two three years, it will be difficult to continue the data gathering that we have undertaken up to now. I would very much appreciate to see that all our efforts in this area are not lost and are transferred to an entity with the structure and vocation to assume this program as a task of national interest.
