:: Research interests

- Ecology and behaviour of reef fish
- Fish larval ecology and recruitment
- Marine Protected Areas

My studies are centred on several aspects of fish biology, ecology and behaviour, namely: life-history strategies, reproductive behaviour, territoriality, alternative reproductive tactics, community structure and dynamics, larval development and ecology, recruitment processes and conservation. Most of the work is done in the field, and we use the comparative approach with littoral fish species, particularly blennies, gobies and gobiesocids. We are also involved in studies of recruitment processes and patterns and structuring mechanisms of littoral fish communities which intent to implement a medium to long term database system that we hope will contribute to the monitoring, management and design of Marine Protected Areas in Portugal.
