Phylogenetics, Biogeography and the Evolution of Behavior and Morphology of Blennioidei and Gobiesocoidei

• develop mitochondrial and nuclear DNA markers in Blennioidei, with an emphasis on Atlantic-Mediterranean genera, in order to resolve the relationships among Blennioidei families, and among genera, particularly in the family Blenniidae.
• confront the molecular phylogeny with systematics based on osteology.
• map morphologic, ecologic and behavioral characters onto the molecular phylogeny, in order to infer the evolution of these characters, and their possible adaptive significance.
• develop a molecular clock for some of the molecular markers in order to test, together with taxon distribution data, different biogeographic hypothesis regarding colonization routes, centers of speciation, and the role of hybridization.
