Population history and phylogeographic structuring in different latitudes of Northeast Atlantic Estuarine Fishes

With the prospect of global warming, it is predicted that boreal and artic marine and estuarine species will suffer an increasing shift of their southern distribution to the north, while the populations of termophilic species are expected to move northward. This project aims to clarify the phylogeographic structure of several estuarine fishes, especially in the northern and southern limits of their distribution. For this, standard phylogeographic and historical demographic tools, like haplotype networks, estimates of population parameters through the coalescent approach and analysis of molecular variance will be applied to sets of mitochondrial and nuclear markers in samples collected in the south (Portugal), middle (Netherlands) and North (Norway) of the studied species distribution. These include the European Flounder, Platichthys flesus (Linnaeus, 1758), the plaice, Pleuronectes platessa Linnaeaus,1758 , sea and river lampreys Petromyzon marinus Linnaeus, 1758 Lampetra spp. Bonnaterre, 1788, sand goby, Pomatochistus minutus (Pallas, 1770) and trout Salmo trutta Linnaeus, 1758.
