Master Degree in Psychocriminology
Qualification awarded:
Master Degree

Level of Qualification:
University higher Education – Masters Level 7 (National Framework of Qualifications, Decree-Law 782/2009, published in Diário da República, 1ª Série, nº 141, July 23th.

Specific Admission Requirements:
Graduates in Psychological Sciences, Psychology or related areas.

Exceptionally, if this requirement is not met, the student may be accepted by the Scientific Council on the basis of his/her curriculum vitae.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning:
Any citizen over 23 years old who does not have the secondary education diploma (12th grade) can attempt to gain admission to a limited number of vacant places available, through special examination which includes an interview (Decree law: Decreto-Lei 64/2006, de 21 de Março).

In accordance with the current legislation (Portaria 401/2007, of Abril 5th and Decreto Lei 64/2006, of March 21st) ISPA recognizes and credits skills acquired in professional and other contexts for academic purposes.

Qualification Requirements:
Intervention in Psychocriminology demands the training of professionals capable to plan, to intervene and to evaluate in judicial-legal, criminal and of social inclusion contexts. The Degree in Psychocriminology aims to provide the students with knowledge in the basic areas of Psychocriminology, as well as familiarise them with the main theories and practices of this domain. It also aims to ensure training in related scientific areas that are indispensable to a global and integrated understanding of human behaviour, giving them skills to employ their knowledge in a critical manner and to do research, respecting the ethical demands that are specific to Psychocriminology.

Key Learning Outcomes:
  1. To be capable to understand of a deepened form:
    • The main theories and models of Psychocriminology;
    • The main methods of Psychocriminology;
    • The normative framework of Criminal, Procedural, of Family and Minors;
    • The relations between the knowledge acquired in the area of Psychology with knowledge acquired in the area of the Psychocriminology;
    • The relations between the knowledge acquired in similar areas to Psychology with knowledge acquired in the area of the Psychocriminology.
  2. To be capable to understand of a deepened form:
    • The knowledge acquired in the domain of the main theories and models of Psychocriminology and mobilizing them in the resolution of problems;
    • The knowledge acquired in the domain of the main methods of the Psychocriminology and mobilizing them in the resolution of problems;
    • The knowledge acquired in the area of Psychology and mobilizing them in the resolution of problems;
    • The knowledge acquired in similar areas and mobilizing them in the resolution of problems.
  3. To be capable to decide and to reflect on ethical and social problems that seldom appear in the research and intervention in Psychocriminology;
  4. To be capable to clearly communicate, to specialists as well as non specialists, the working conclusions as well as the underlying theoreticians and methodological background;
  5. To be capable to develop research in the area of Psychocriminology, that allows learning with a high degree of autonomy throughout life.

Profile of the Programme:
2 (two) years, 4 (four) semesters, 38 weeks of full-time study per academic year, 120 ECTS. The degree includes two semesters of dissertation.

Mode of Study:
Full-time. Two semesters with a curricular component and two semesters of dissertation.

Access to Further Study:
The Master’s degree allows access to 3rd Cycle studies, according to the conditions stated by NARIC (National Academic Recognition Information Center).

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading:
On a 0 to 20 grading scheme, a minimum grade of 10 in each course unit is necessary to pass.
The assessment in each course may include:
  • Type 1 Assessment Methods: exams (with or without oral presentation);
  • Type 2 Assessment Methods: group or individual essays (with or without oral presentation);
Assessment may also include the evaluation of participation in class.

The following table presents the possibilities of arrangement of Assessment Methods and the respective percentage of the final grade.

The type of assessment of each course is included in the course syllabus that also contains the course objectives, course expectations, course contents and recommended reading.
The Master’s requires public presentation and discussion of a written dissertation before an expert panel designated by the Scientific Council, composed of a President and at least to examiners from the specific academic area of the Master’s (one internal and one external).

Graduation Requirements:
To graduate the student must complete the 120 ECTS successfully.
